Dropped D Tuning (Tuning Down A Whole Step)
Submitted by UncleD on Thu, 04/12/2007 - 12:29.
Many artists tune their guitars to a "dropped d tuning" or down a whole step to create a deeper sound. On this site, this is often done by bands like the Drive By Truckers.
For standard dropped D tuning you simply tune the bottom E string down to a D and then leave the rest - so DADGBE. This adds a heavier bassier sound.
To tune down a whole step you essentially tune the bottom E down to a D and then tune the rest of the strings the way you normally would off of that D. You will end up with:
DGCFAD
You can use a capo on the 2nd fret to play in standard tuning.

drop D, Decoration Day
It looks like almost all of the DBTruckers album Decoration Day is in this full step down tuning. That's kind of odd, or maybe it isn't. Anyone know any more background on the recording of the album?
Also - how come when you type in an artist such as them, only the first few tabs are listed instead of everything that's on this site by them.

DBT Tuning
I was trying to learn Little Bonnie and came to the conclusion that they had probably tuned the acoustic guitar down a whole step for that song, I decided to google it and that brung me to this website whereupon I discovered there were actually other alt-country loving people out there.
If you click on the
If you click on the "advanced search" tab when searching you can select to show just tabulature. The best way to access all the tabs, however, is to simply go to the main artists page via the artists link at the top.

On the search page - http://www.12stringblues.com/search/node/ you will see it now. You would have before but it was a minor configuration issue....

Being picky
Sorry to be picky but there is something wrong with this post.
Dropped D or Drop D tuning is when you tune the low E string to D and leave the rest of the guitar in standard tuning.
Double Drop D, is when you tune both the E strings to D.
Full step is where you tune all the strings down one full step. DGCFAD
Half step is where you tune all the strings down a half a step.
Nothing picky at all -
Nothing picky at all - thanks for the feedback! I've updated the original post and I'm sure others will find your posting helpful.
